Board Approves Plan to Reopen Schools

At the Aug. 17 School Board meeting, the Board unanimously approved Puyallup’s 2020-21 Reopening Plan, which starts the school year in a full-time distance learning format for all students, and plans for gradual, in-person instruction offerings with proper health and safety measures in place.  

This 64-page report, which includes full implementation plans for remote and in-person learning that meets health and safety requirements, is required by the state to reopen before the first day of school, Sept. 3. 

The presentation to the School Board included: 

  • • New Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department directive, issued by Dr. Chen Aug. 11, requiring all Pierce County schools to begin the school year in a full-time distance learning mode. 
  • • Health requirements:  Physical distancing, face coverings, meals, transportation, cleaning, screenings, symptoms protocols
  • • Education requirements and modifications:  Instructional hours and days, instructional delivery, attendance reporting and tracking, learning standards, grading, distance/hybrid learning schedules
  • • Technology enhancements:  Devices for all students in grades K-12, increased WiFi access and hotspot availability for families in need, Family University (a collection of quick-tip videos and resources), standardized digital platforms
  • • Social/emotional modifications:   Increased supports for problem-solving, self-discipline, emotion management and interpersonal skills.
  • • Vulnerable student support:  Developing plans to offer in-person instruction to students with the largest barriers to academic success.* 
  • • Communication enhancements:  Standardized newsletter template and distribution schedule for school communications.

* Per the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the plan’s exception allows schools to provide limited, in-person instruction to students who need additional intensive learning support, such as students with special needs and an Individualized Education Plan.
