”It is 6:00 a.m., mom is dressed and ready for work. She is putting last night’s homework in the backpacks, signing the field trip permission slip, refereeing at the kitchen table over a Pokemon debate, finishing packing lunches, and finds the lost “must wear” Converse before making the last call for everyone to gather their things. Mom grabs her purse, keys, and computer as she follows her children out the door.”

Every day parents and guardians juggle between parenthood and the demands of work. Included in the juggling act is finding childcare that is both quality and accessible.

Over 19 million children in the United States who need high quality before and after-school Two girls smiling at tablecare currently lack access. Students who are enrolled in a high-quality after-school program have higher test scores, an increase in math and reading performances, better attendance and improved behavior.

When quality care is available, working parents’ careers are positively impacted. Parents are less likely to be late for work, absent, or distracted.

Last year the Puyallup School District partnered with Right At School (RAS) to help close the access gap and provide parents before-and after-school care that is both quality and flexible.

The program provides daily homework assistance and curriculum that support standards in English Language Arts, Literacy, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Social Emotional Learning, Fine Arts, and Physical Fitness.

“We were interested in working with an organization that promised the implementation of a meaningful before and after-school childcare program in every elementary school that focused on academics and social and emotional development – Right At School delivered on that promise.”

Chief Instructional Leadership Officer Vince Pecchia

RAS provides affordable tuition, accepts state subsidized assistance, and offers numerous discounts (free and reduced lunch, military, sibling, and employee discounts). With the highly flexible enrollment options, parents can choose between before-school care, after-school care, both, one day a week, or five days a week.

Every elementary school in our district has a RAS program, eliminating the barrier of transportation from childcare to school and back to childcare.

The program has proven to be very successful for Puyallup families. Last year 1,063 students participated in the RAS program. This summer, the RAS organization had their highest enrollment with 475 students. It is anticipated to be even more successful for the 2018-19 school year with over 1,000 students already enrolled.

“The partnership at the Puyallup School District has been nothing short of amazing.  From the custodial team, to facilities teams, to office teams, to teachers, PTA members, principals, and district support staff - each team has been warm and welcoming.  It is evident there is a desire to service as many children as possible in the district.  The Right At School and PSD teams collaborate on a regular basis and work hard to ensure the best possible experience for the children we serve.”

Right At School Regional Director Tiffany Bliss

RAS provides safe, engaging, and meaningful in-school and extracurricular programs to
enrich lives of students by building their confidence, creativity, and character. For parents, RAS provides childcare that is both accessible and quality, giving them a peace of mind.
