Puyallup School Board honored as state Board of Distinction

The Puyallup School Board has been named a Board of Distinction in Washington state for the fourth consecutive year.

Puyallup is one of 22 school boards from among 295 school districts statewide selected to receive the recognition this year from the Washington State School Directors Association (WSSDA).

The five-member Puyallup School Board will be recognized on November 17 at the annual WSSDA conference in Bellevue.

Superintendent Tim Yeomans, who will also attend the ceremony in Bellevue, said, “We are very fortunate to have a school board which is committed to ongoing and meaningful communication with our community, as well as upholding very high standards for the performance of staff and students.”

Board President Dane Looker added, "It's a tremendous honor to be recognized by WSSDA once again this year. The board is so thankful for the dedication of Puyallup educators and the leadership team, and we are excited to continue our sponsorship of such extraordinary work."

Locally, the directors will be recognized for the special honor at the November 6 Puyallup School Board meeting. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Ballou Junior High School, 9116 – 136th Street East in Puyallup.

The award recognizes the work of school board directors Pat Donovan, Chris Ihrig, Michael Keaton, Dane Looker, and Kathy Yang.

The annual Boards of Distinction program honors school boards that demonstrate effective use of the Washington School Board Standards. The standards, developed and adopted by WSSDA in 2009, promote research-based governance practices that lead to high levels of student and district achievement, and help close the opportunity gap.

Award applicants submitted essays and supporting evidence to demonstrate how they are putting the standards into practice. This year, applicants addressed the following:

  • Respecting and advocating mutual understanding of board and superintendent roles.
  • A commitment to continuous improvement in student achievement.
  • Community-wide communication of district information and decisions. 

Applications are evaluated by an independent review panel.
