CogAT 7 screening assessment for second graders
CogAT 7 screening assessment for second graders
Posted on 01/18/2018

The CogAT 7 Screening Form is designed to help identify students who should be considered for advanced academic programs.  This assessment will take place next month for all second-grade students in the Puyallup School District.  The assessment consists of the Picture/Verbal Analogies test, the Number Analogies test, and the Figure Matrices test.  All three tests are entirely pictorial. The Screening Form provides a single score that estimates a student’s general reasoning abilities.  The score is one data point used to determine which students might benefit from accelerated coursework.  The group-administered test takes 30-40 minutes and is an online format.

If you chose not to have your student participate in this assessment, forms are available at each school office.  All parents will receive the test results with the second trimester report card.  The results will include an explanation of the score.

If your child’s score on the CogAT 7 Screening Form indicates she/he might benefit from accelerated coursework, you will receive an invitation for your child to participate in the CogAT 7 Post-Screener test.  The invitation, sent by USPS mail by the end of February, will include your child’s score on the CogAT 7 Screening Form, information about the identification process for the highly capable program, and a permission slip.  If you choose to have your child take the post-screener test, the permission slip must be returned in a timely manner.

The CogAT 7 scores, along with district assessments and teacher input, will be used to make placement decisions for the 2018-19 school year.  If your child is offered highly capable placement, parents have the option of accepting the placement in the highly capable program or having their child remain in general education.
