Dr. Pedro Noguera speaks to Puyallup Educators

Urban sociologist and UCLA Professor of Education Dr. Pedro Noguera visited Puyallup on October 6, 2015 for two special events sponsored by the Puyallup School District and Chief Leschi Schools.  An Evening with Dr. Pedro Noguera began with an intimate reception, where invitation-only Pierce County educators could listen to Noguera’s powerful message and ask questions, at the Puyallup School District’s Karshner Center for Culture & Arts.  Following this event, Dr. Noguera spoke to the public at the campus of Chief Leschi Schools, at an event which was attended by over 150 people including area superintendents, school board members, district administrators, and teachers.


Dr. Noguera was in our community in conjunction with the Washington Student Achievement Council’s 2015 Pave the Way Conference held at the Tacoma Convention Center on October 5 and 6, at which he was the keynote speaker.  Others speaking at the conference included Dr. Amy Eveskcige, superintendent of Chief Leschi schools, Marilyn Strickland, mayor of Tacoma, and Dr. Gene Sharratt, executive director of Washington Student Achievement Council.


Puyallup School District Chief Equity and Achievement Officer Gerald Denman said, “Dr. Noguera’s uplifting message of hope encourages us to continue the work, to aggressively close the opportunity gap for all kids.  It comes at a time when we all are
searching for answers. We need to come together collaboratively, whether politicians, teachers, parents, or community; with focus and determination to all work together. As Dr. Noguera stated, ‘we can fix this.”


Dr. Noguera has published over 11 books and 200 articles, focusing on topics such as closing the opportunity gap, the roles of parents in their children’s success in school, elevating the perception of teaching as a career,  conditions that promote student achievement, and the effect of poverty on education. He has held faculty appointments in the departments of Teaching and Learning and Humanities and Social Sciences at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Development at New York University; tenured faculty appointments at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and at the University of California, Berkeley.
