Dear PSD Families:
With our governor declaring a state of emergency due to COVID-19, drastic measures are being taken to stem the spread of the virus. With more and more districts announcing school closures in the heavily affected areas, we believe our county will soon follow. PSD is working closely with state and county leaders as well as the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department in making decisions regarding our schools.
Our hope and desire at this time is for our students and families to continue with their normal routine as much as possible under the circumstances, but our first concern is for the health and safety of our community. We understand that an extended school closure would cause disruption and pose many challenges to families. As advised by Governor Inslee, we are making preparations to serve the needs of our students and staff if we receive the demand from the Governor to suspend normal operations.
As we navigate these unprecedented times, the district leadership has been creative and incredibly mindful of our community's needs in our planning to continue student learning and extend services when we are unable to hold normal classes. Our Superintendent Designee Dr. Vince Pecchia and incoming Superintendent Dr. John Polm, along with the entire PSD staff, have the deepest concern for all our students and families, and we thank everyone for their calm and competent handling of all the details. We as a Board will continue to work with district leadership and collaborate with our community partners to do what is necessary and prudent for the health of our community.
Please continue to watch for updates and information from the district, principals, and teachers as things are changing daily. We are fortunate to live in Puyallup where people come together in times of crisis and support one another. We thank you for your patience and partnership through this difficult time.
