Members of the 2014 state championship baseball, fastpitch, and boys golf teams, as well as champion wrestler Matt Voss, waved, cheered, and held their state title trophies high above their heads as they rode through downtown.

Crowds of families, educators, classmates, and community members of all ages waved pom-poms and cheered as the athletes and their coaches passed by in three U.S. Army 2nd Ranger Battalion trucks, as well as in Puyallup and Edgewood fire department trucks.

The Puyallup High School band, as well as cheer and dance team members, joined in the parade, as did several members of the high school administration who waved from convertible vehicles.

“This was amazing — it was awesome,” said Quinn Rawson, captain of the state championship boys baseball team. Rawson, who played first base this year, said it was exciting to see the community turnout for the parade.

Golf team member Connor Mildenberger added, “The turnout was bigger than I thought it would be. It was awesome seeing so many people on Meridian.”

Kylie Perez, one of three fastpitch team captains, echoed those same thoughts at the end of the parade, where players stopped in the Sparks Stadium parking lot to snap photographs and give high-fives.

“I didn’t really know what to expect today,” she said. “But I definitely didn’t expect there to be that many people.”

The parade was sponsored by the City of Puyallup and several local businesses. Earlier in the week, Mayor John Knutsen proclaimed June 2014 as “Puyallup High School Champions Month” in the City of Puyallup.
