First day fun!

Puyallup students and families have swarmed school campuses, excited to begin a new school year. Each of the district’s 32 schools have been hosting Back To School events to help students get ready for a successful year and help parents make connections with teachers and staff. On Thursday, September 4, the doors swung wide open for the official first day of classes.

Students in first through 12th grade began their studies on September 4. Kindergarten students begin Monday, September 9.

It was all smiles (well, mostly smiles) for students, parents, teachers, and school staff as we celebrated the first day of school. For many, the first day also meant a new school. With a growing enrollment, Puyallup School District opened a brand new school, Dessie Evans Elementary with 964 students!

Thanks to voters who passed a construction bond in 2015, several elementary schools were rebuilt to accommodate more students. In the past six years, our schools have grown by nearly 1,500 students! Families at Firgrove, Northwood, and Sunrises elementaries also celebrated their first day of a school with new buildings and are serving 562, 519, and 748 students respectively.

Pope students and staff are looking forward to the first day of school in September 2020 when their new building will be complete. For now, they are located in the former Firgrove school on Meridian.

Parents weren’t the only photographers capturing “First Day” photos. Check out the gallery below to see some great smiles our district photographers were able to find. Then, take a few seconds to watch the action compiled by our district videographer.

Come back to this site next week and we’ll have kindergarten picture to share as well!
