Puget Sound ESD Educator Pathway

Puget Sound ESD is hosting its second Educator Pathways Event on Thursday, October 11 from 4:00 – 6:00p.m. The Educator Pathways event is designed to connect individuals with colleges and institutions offering alternate pathways to the first level regular teaching certificate (full residency certification). Alternative routes are designed for career changers and for individuals already working in the school system who want to transition to full‐time teaching. Compared to traditional educator preparation programs, alternative routes tend to be shorter, more convenient, more affordable, and more practically oriented. Washington State currently has four routes that cater to specific populations:

  • Route 1: For classified instructional employees (e.g., paraeducators) with an Associate's degree
  • Route 2: For classified staff with a Bachelor's degree
  • Route 3: For "career changers" with a Bachelor's degree
  • Route 4: For district staff with Bachelor's degrees employed on conditional or emergency substitute certificates
