Puyallup School District student-athletes distinguished themselves this fall on the scoreboards as well as in their academics. Four teams earned South Puget Sound League (SPSL) 4A champions. In addition, over 30 teams earned Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) academic awards.

Rick Wells, director of athletics, health, and fitness, presented the many achievements to the Puyallup School District Board of Directors at the January 8 School Board meeting at Ballou Junior High School.

Wells celebrated by saying, “Success is best measured by hard work, discipline, and the will to win.  Puyallup School District athletes proved this time and again throughout the 2017 fall season. We are proud of their accomplishments!”

The Emerald Ridge volleyball team tied for the title of SPSL 4A co-champions with 7 wins and 1 loss.

The Emerald Ridge Boys water polo team earned third place in the SPSL 4A with 5 wins and 4 losses.

The Puyallup High School football team earned the title of SPSL 4A champions with an undefeated season of 8 wins.

The Puyallup High School girls soccer team earned the title of SPSL 4A champions with 12 wins and 4 ties.

The Puyallup High School volleyball team also tied for SPSL 4A co-champions with 7 wins and 1 loss.

The Puyallup High School boys tennis team tied for third place with 8 wins and 4 losses.

The Rogers High School Boys golf team tied for third place in the SPSL 4A division with 5 wins and 3 losses.

The WIAA awards teams for high academic performance throughout the sports seasons. The Distinguished Academic Recognition is given for combined team GPAs of 3.0 - 3.49 or Outstanding Academic Recognition for combined GPAs of 3.5 - 4.00.

Puyallup School District teams earned 14 WIAA Distinguished Academic Awards and 17 WIAA Outstanding Academic Awards.

With 31 teams earning combined team GPAs of 3.0 or above, Puyallup student-athletes have proven that their hard work and dedication continues off the field and into their studies.

Wells exclaimed, “Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of intentional intelligent effort. The outstanding academic accomplishments of our fall athletic programs emphasizes this fact. I offer an enthusiastic congratulations to those thirty-one PSD teams who achieved such a pinnacle point in their academic pursuits.”

The Puyallup High School football coaches have been recognized by the SPSL as coaches of the year. Typically the SPSL reserves coach of the year to one coach per sport; however, after such an outstanding season, the SPSL recognized the entire coaching team of the Puyallup Vikings. These coaches include: Gary Jeffers, Ray Brassard, John Anderson, Brian Grout, John Garden, Kevin Hanis, Spencer Boyes, and Ken Fleisch.

Whether you are a student, parent, or community member we invite you to attend some of the various games and matches throughout the school year in support of Puyallup students.
