Volunteer of the Year announced

Volunteer of the Year Laura Tacy is described as a leader who shows kindness and patience to students and staff. Currently in her fifth year as a volunteer at Stahl Junior High, her children are no longer attending there.

Tacy was surprised recently when she was invited to a Stahl Junior High staff meeting where Superintendent Tim Yeomans congratulated her as the 2016-17 Puyallup School District Volunteer of the Year. She received a standing ovation from the staff.

“I was surprised by the recognition and am very honored to be thought of and appreciated for what I do for the school,” said Tacy.

She was nominated for the recognition by Stahl Assistant Principal Karey Richardson who said Tacy is giving of both her time and resources.

“She consistently shows up to help and lead events and sports. She organizes parent volunteers, plans the student of the quarter breakfast, runs the Booster Club, and helps with the yearly auction. She saw a need here and continues to serve.”

Tacy began volunteering at Carson Elementary when her children attended there. When they transitioned to Stahl she was impressed with Principal Troy Hodge and the teaching staff and discovered she enjoys interacting with the junior high students. “Troy Hodge is an amazing principal and he brings energy to the school,” said Tacy.

She also volunteers at Rogers High School where she oversees the Booster cCub for wrestling and she recently formed a running Booster Club for track and cross country.

The Volunteer of the Year recognition is given to a volunteer who makes an outstanding contribution to the school; shows dedication above and beyond their responsibilities; and devotes a significant amount of time volunteering.

The district currently has more than 9,000 approved volunteers.

The Puyallup School Board will recognize Tacy at the regularly scheduled meeting on April 3 at Edgemont Junior High at 6:00 p.m.
