Mumps Information

Mumps Information:

Mumps is a very contagious illness that causes swelling of the saliva glands in front of the ear, pain in jaw/neck area, fever, headache and tiredness. Occasionally, mumps can also affect other organs, including the testicles, ovaries, and (rarely) the brain. Vaccination with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine can help prevent mumps.

In the event of a mumps outbreak within a school, students and staff that do not have proof of immunity or vaccination may risk being excluded from school. To assist with ensuring that the educational process is undisturbed and that the community is well protected against the spread of the disease, the MultiCare Immunization Clinic located in South Hill Mall is now staffed to provide adult MMR vaccinations. The Immunization Clinic is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm and offers a discounted rate of $60.

When more people are vaccinated, it helps to prevent or reduce the severity of illness in our community. For more information on Mumps, please visit the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department website at If you have questions or concerns, you may call them at (253) 798-6410.
