A second grader at Edgerton Elementary and a former Maplewood Elementary student are top winners in the annual Washington State PTA Reflections contest recognizing achievement in the arts.

Ethan Barker of Edgerton Elementary, and Cassidy Benton, a second grader who attended Maplewood Elementary until February of this year, are among 27 students in Washington to receive an “Outstanding Interpretation” Reflections award.

By winning one of the state’s top awards, the two students’ artistic entries automatically advanced to the National PTA Reflections competition. Benton also won an Award of Merit at the national level for her music composition entry.

Barker won the top honor at state for his film production entry, while Benton won in the music composition category.

The state recognized Barker and Benton, as well as all other students statewide who placed at the state competition, at the annual Washington State PTA Reflections award ceremony April 18 in Bellevue. Winners were chosen from among more than 1,000 entries submitted to the state level.

The Reflections program is a cultural arts competition designed to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their original works.

Students submit entries in photography, dance choreography, film production, music composition, literature, and visual arts based on a different theme announced each year. This year students entered projects based on the theme: “The world would be a better place if …”

Barker’s winning film production entry is titled, “The world would be a better place if everyone reduced their carbon footprint.” Benton’s musical composition is titled, “The world would be a better place if people took better care of those in need.”

The theme for the 2015-16 school year is “Let Your Imagination Fly.”
