11-03-11: A picture-perfect haircut event at Hunt Elementary

Nearly 50 Hunt Elementary students lined up in the school gym last month to get haircuts so they could look their best for student picture day the next morning.

Five hair stylists donated their time to cut students’ hair at the first-ever “A Picture-Perfect Haircut” event, sponsored by the school PTA.

Families were invited to give donations, and all proceeds went to the school PTA to cover event costs, said PTA President Mindy Gailey.

“There are a lot of families who can’t afford to cut their children’s hair, so we thought this event would work well,” Gailey said.

Gailey learned of a similar event held in another area and thought it could be successful at Hunt Elementary, where more than one third of the 650-plus students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

The hair stylists who donated their time and services included three who work in salons and two who work out of their homes.

As one family left the gym, Principal Rebecca Williams called out, “See you later boys. You look great! Keep those smiles for picture day tomorrow.”

Williams said the event was so successful that the school may repeat it in spring on the night before class pictures.
