11-03-11: Family Days and Evenings at the Museum set for 2011-12

“Ideas, Creativity, and Inventions” is the theme for this year’s Family Days at the Karshner Museum. Also, new this year are "Evenings at the Museum," a series of five events that started in October.

Family Days are held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month, except in April when there is no Family Day scheduled.

The remaining Family Days will focus on the following:

  • December 3: Social Entrepreneur/Free Trade
  • January 7: Maps/Cartography/Exploration
  • February 4: Shapes and Patterns
  • March 3: Sustainability/Recycling
  • May 5: Preservation Day – Historical Inventions
  • June 2: Air, Space, and Things That Fly

Cost is $3 per person, $10 per family, or free for those with annual memberships to Friends of the Museum. Memberships are $15 per person or $25 per family, and forms are available at the museum.

New this year are “Evenings at the Museum,” a series of five events that started in October. Proceeds from the events will be used to update the museum exhibits. Events scheduled during the rest of this school year include:

  • December 15, 4 to 8 p.m.: Bead for Life. Bead necklaces and bracelets, cocoa butter lip balm, and soap handmade by women in Uganda will be for sale. Proceeds are returned to the bead makers to purchase clothing, food, and homes for their families. The event is free.
  • February 17, 7 p.m.: An evening with Dr. and Mrs. Karshner. Actors will portray the couple and tell of their adventures around the world. Cost is $15.
  • April 13, 7 p.m.: Japanese Cultural Performers. Cost is $15.
  • CANCELED: June 15, 7 p.m.: Film and panel discussion on the Holocaust. Cost is $15.

Karshner Museum is located at 309 Fourth St. N.E., adjacent to Stewart Elementary School in Puyallup.
