01-13-12: Apply by January 20 for Superintendent Search Observer Panel

Community members are invited to apply by January 20 to serve on a panel that will observe preliminary interviews of candidates vying to become Puyallup School District’s next superintendent.

The deadline for submitting applications is 1 p.m. Friday, January 20. Applications are available in school offices throughout the district.

Return the completed application form to the Puyallup School District, Office of the Superintendent, 302 Second St. S.E., Puyallup, WA 98372.

The Puyallup School Board is seeking about 12 people, representing a cross-section of the Puyallup community, to join about a dozen district staff members on the Superintendent Search Observer Panel.

The school board will review applications to determine which community members will serve on the panel.

Those selected will observe preliminary interviews of six to eight superintendent candidates selected by the board and provide written input to the school directors on the candidates’ responses to each of the questions asked.

Preliminary candidates for superintendent are expected to be named in early February. Interviews will be held on February 15 and 16. Panel members must be available to serve from 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. both days.

Other interested community members are invited to be in the audience to listen to the preliminary interviews. Unlike the panel, audience members do not need to participate in all of the preliminary interviews.

A form will be given to audience members to share written comments about the candidates. Those responses will be given to the school board.

Preliminary interviews formally begin at 4 p.m. both days at the Best Western Park Plaza Hotel, 620 South Hill Park Drive in Puyallup.

The information the panel provides will assist the school board in selecting three finalist candidates to return for interviews on February 28 and 29, and March 1.

The community will have a chance to meet each of the three finalists during public forums scheduled on those three days. Times and locations will be announced.

Community involvement in the superintendent search process has been a top priority for the school board.

The public was invited in November to complete a superintendent leadership profile survey online, and public forums were held in December so that community members could share the qualities they are looking for in the next superintendent.

Superintendent search consultant Dennis Ray, of Northwest Leadership Associates, is leading the national search for Puyallup School District’s next superintendent.

The school board has set a goal of hiring a new superintendent no later than March 30, 2012.

Puyallup School District Superintendent Tony Apostle will retire June 30 after eight years as leader of the state’s ninth largest school district.
