01-24-12: Edgemont-Hilltop Community Field dedication January 31

Community members are invited to attend the January 31 dedication of the Edgemont-Hilltop Community Field.

The dedication begins at 3:30 p.m. at the field, which is the former site of Hilltop Elementary School adjacent to Edgemont Junior High, 2300 110th Ave. E. in Edgewood.

Exterior bricks from the Hilltop Elementary classroom building, which opened in 1957 and closed in fall 2009, will be given to interested community members at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis at the dedication ceremony.

Rudy Fyles, executive director of education support and operations, will be master of ceremonies. Guest speakers will include Puyallup School Board President Greg Heath and Edgemont Junior High Principal Eric Hogan.

Edgemont-Hilltop Community Field was selected in November 2010 as the name for a play field and adjacent playground area at the former Hilltop Elementary School.

Grass was planted where the elementary school once stood, and the school’s former playground remains for community use.

Several climbing toys, picnic-style tables, a play shed, backstops with bleachers, the parking lot, and the multipurpose building remain on the property. The multipurpose building is used as the district’s Textbook and Media Center.

Long-term, the district plans to relocate the Edgemont Junior High track and field from its current site south of 24th Street to the new play field area.
