More than 200 parents and community members attended a meeting hosted at Edgemont Junior High School on October 16 to hear Superintendent Tim Yeomans share district interest in providing unique educational offerings for students.

Based on community input, as well as discussions with staff, Yeomans proposes the following be brought before the school board at a future date:

  1. Edgemont will remain a junior high school for all students grades 7-9 within the Edgemont Junior High attendance area. Beginning in fall 2014, the school will begin to offer enhanced academic options for students grades 7-9 including world language and interdisciplinary courses.
  2. The district is exploring opening an international school on the Edgemont Junior High campus. The school will offer rigorous coursework for students in grades 10 through 12. District leadership is currently exploring the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum which offers a diploma program for students in grades 11 and 12.
  3. During their ninth-grade year, students at Edgemont Junior High School will have options to consider when planning their high school experience. They may proceed to Puyallup High School, as has been the long-standing past practice, or they may complete a district choice form in order to be enrolled in Edgemont International School 10-12.

In an effort to help parents and students of Edgemont Junior High School better understand their options, an International Baccalaureate Information Night for ninth-grade students and their parents is scheduled for November 7 in the Edgemont Commons from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

For interested ninth-graders and their parents from elsewhere in our community, an additional International Baccalaureate Informational Night has been scheduled for November 14 in the Edgemont Commons from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Parents and community members with additional feedback or questions are invited to a North Hill Community meeting on November 19 in the Edgemont Commons from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.
