02-13-12: School Board to interview seven candidates for superintendent

The Puyallup School Board will interview seven candidates this week in its search for a new superintendent.

Directors unanimously agreed at the February 13 school board meeting to narrow a field of 16 superintendent applicants to the following seven people, who will have preliminary interviews on February 15 and 16:

  • Debra Aungst, Deputy Superintendent, Student Achievement and Education Support, Puyallup School District
  • Marc Brouillet, Director of Human Resources and Student Services, Yelm Community Schools
  • Carl Bruner, Superintendent, Mount Vernon School District
  • Joshua Garcia, Assistant Superintendent -- Teaching for Learning K-12 and Secondary Schools, Federal Way Public Schools
  • Lester "Flip" Herndon Jr., Superintendent, Bremerton School District
  • Michael Newman, Deputy Superintendent, Business and Operations, Auburn School District
  • Timothy Yeomans, Superintendent, Meridian School District

Preliminary interviews are open to the public and are scheduled:

  • Wednesday, February 15: 4-9 p.m., with a short dinner break. Audience members are welcome to bring a sack dinner.
  • Thursday, February 16: 3:15-4:30 p.m., and 7:30-9:30 p.m. There will be a three-hour break from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

The preliminary interviews will take place at the Best Western Park Plaza Hotel, 620 South Hill Park Drive in Puyallup.

Thirty-two people, including 17 community members and 15 district employees, have been named to a panel that will observe the preliminary interviews.

Superintendent candidates will field questions asked by Puyallup School Board directors, and panelists will provide written input on the candidates’ responses to each of the questions.

A form will be given to audience members to share written comments about the candidates. Those responses also will be given to the school board. Unlike the panel, audience members do not need to participate in all of the preliminary interviews.

The information the panel and audience provides will assist the school board in selecting up to three finalist candidates to return for interviews on February 28, 29, and March 1.

The community will have a chance to meet each of the finalists during public forums scheduled at noon and 7 p.m. on each of those three days.

The noon forums will be held at the Education Service Center, 302 Second St. S.E. in downtown Puyallup. The evening forums will be held on February 28 in the Rogers High School library, February 29 in the Emerald Ridge High School library, and March 1 in the Puyallup High School library.

The school board has set a goal of hiring a new superintendent no later than March 30, 2012.

Puyallup School District Superintendent Tony Apostle will retire June 30 after eight years as leader of the state’s ninth largest school district.
