06-10-12: Puyallup High senior wins $2,500 scholarship

Puyallup High School senior Brian Pinkard is the recipient of a prestigious $2,500 National Merit Scholarship.

Pinkard is one of 2,500 distinguished high school seniors selected to receive a merit scholarship from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists from across the nation.

National Merit Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

The winners are selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors and may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.

Pinkard plans to study mechanical engineering starting this fall at LaFayette College in Pennsylvania.

The 18-year-old has been active on Puyallup High School’s tennis team and has also played trumpet in the jazz band and wind ensemble.

He was also chosen this spring and honored by the Puyallup School Board last month as one of Puyallup High School’s 20 Outstanding Seniors.
