07-31-12: School supply donations accepted for families in need

Local businesses and community groups have set up donation boxes to collect back-to-school supplies for students in need.

Several organizations are partnering with Communities In Schools of Puyallup (CISP) and the Puyallup School District to organize school supply drives.

School supply donation drop-off sites include:

August 1-15

  • BECU Puyallup, 13308 Meridian E. and 3803 South Meridian

August 1-24

  • Champion Martial Arts Center, 15111 105th Ave. Ct. E. Suite A

August 1–31

  • TAPCO Credit Union, 5303 112th St. E., Tacoma

August 6-24
For the third straight year, Red Canoe Credit Union is sponsoring a "Fill the Canoe" school supplies drive. The credit union will match pound-for-pound new school supplies donated in canoes or other donation receptacles set up at:

  • Puyallup-Sumner Chamber of Commerce, 323 N. Meridian St.
  • Puyallup City Hall, 333 S. Meridian St.
  • Puyallup Fair & Events Center, 110 9th Ave. S.W.
  • Puyallup School District Education Service Center, 302 Second St. SE.
  • Red Canoe Credit Union, 16510 Meridian St. E.
  • South Hill Mall, 3500 S. Meridian (Center Court)

Items especially in need this year include backpacks appropriate for junior high and high school students; 2- to 3-inch three-ring binders; colored pencils; highlighters; scissors suitable for students in grades four through six; pencils and pencil pouches; graph paper; scientific calculators; binder dividers; and college-ruled composition notebooks, filler paper, and spiral notebooks.

CISP Executive Director Jan Mauk will work with district schools to provide school supplies to children in need.
