EJH Student Dominates in National Speedskating Championship

Last month, Edgemont Junior High 9th Grade Student Leah Choi competed in the U.S. Long Track Speedskating Junior and Senior Championships in Milwaukee, WI, earning first place in every competition she raced in.

Choi placed first in 500m, 1000m, 1500m, and 3000m events, becoming the overall national champion in the 13 to 14-year-old group.

According to Choi, her mother introduced her to the sport in 3rd grade, and she has competed every year since except for one due to COVID-19. Choi's previous speedskating competition results include:

  • 5th grade - 1st place in nationals
  • 6th grade - 3rd place in nationals
  • 8th grade - 2nd place in nationals

When not training or competing on the ice, Choi also tutors local elementary students. She also hopes to compete internationally in the junior world championships in a few years.
