The Puyallup School District joins a select number of districts offering an elementary Spanish dual language program at Karshner and Dessie Evans Elementary Schools. Placement in grades K-3 are offered at both elementary schools; placement in grade 4 is only available at Karshner at this time.
This enriched learning model is an effective way for a student to learn a second language. Students completing the program are:
· Biliterate: Able to speak, read and write at advanced levels in both English and Spanish reflective of their age.
· Bicultural: Able to be more flexible, process perspectives from multiple viewpoints, and more easily make cross-cultural connections.
· Academically Oriented: Able to perform at or above same grade level peers in academic subjects as well as standardized assessments.
The application period will be open through Jan. 27. Families will be notified by Feb. 1 of program acceptance. Families will have the option of having their child begin mid-year on Feb 6, or this fall. Start online application here (English | Spanish)
To learn more about the program families are encouraged to attend an upcoming informational event or visit the Family Q&A section posted on the district website.
Note: Transportation is not provided. Families wanting to enroll their child in the Spanish Dual Language Program at Karshner or Dessie Evans who reside outside of those school-specific attendance boundaries will need to provide their own transportation to and from school.
