The Puyallup School District is a big supporter of Unified
Sports. Unified Sports is an all-inclusive program that joins special needs
athletes and peer-partners on teams for training and competition.
Pack the Gym is a basketball event that started in the
district in 2011 by John Anderson, Puyallup High School unified basketball
coach. Teams begin practicing in mid-December then, in January, play at
different high schools. Teams typically consists of at least six special needs
athletes and four peer-partners.
This event provides an opportunity for students, staff, parents,
and community to support and cheer for students with special needs. They are
the stars of the game. Students show an outstanding level of support at Pack
the Gym nights. The high schools’ bands and cheerleaders come play and cheer in
support of their peers. It is a night filled with the true spirit of peer
support and camaraderie.
Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend a Pack the Gym
event.
