Bond Oversight Committee views progress of new school

The Bond Oversight Committee observed firsthand the progress on one of the 2015 School Construction and Facility Improvements Bond projects when they toured the new Northwood Elementary on May 1, 2019.

Bond Oversight TourThey held their regularly scheduled meeting and received updates on all projects before touring Northwood, which is scheduled for completion in mid-July. Dessie F. Evans, Firgrove, and Sunrise Elementary are also on schedule to open in September. Construction is beginning this spring on the Pope Elementary remodel, scheduled to open in fall 2020.

Highlights during the tour were classrooms with double doors for thematic teaching, project rooms adjoining the classrooms for small group and collaborative spaces, and an expansive library. They learned about safety measures built into the school and how the location at the back of the site will assist with traffic flow and bus loops.

The BOC was commissioned to oversee and make recommendations to the board regarding the implementation of the 2015 voter approved $292.5 million School Construction and Facility Improvements bond measure with respect to scope, schedule, and cost of the projects. The charter states the committee will make periodic reports to the board on the progress of the bond program and make recommendations as to any changes to the baseline of the scope of work.

BOC CommitteeThe committee is comprised of nine community members and district administration which includes operations and capital projects.

The BOC will continue to meet regularly to review the bond projects and report to the school board. They plan to tour Dessie F. Evans, Firgrove, and Sunrise in the fall.
