Community works together to support students

It was late Thursday afternoon when Jacquie Rutherford and Brenda Snowden from Mt. Rainier Federal Credit Union arrived at the Puyallup School District with an SUV full of school supply donations.

The number of donations they collect are matched by the City of Puyallup. Next, the Red Canoe Credit Union will match a dollar for each pound of supplies donated.

The annual school supply drive provides essential basic supplies and backpacks to students and families in need. Items needed the most are large backpacks; 2inch binders; dividers; highlighters; sharpies; three ring pencil pouches; and colored pencils.

Sponsored by Communities In Schools of Puyallup, in partnership with Red Canoe Credit Union located on 39th and Meridian, and 16510 Meridian St E, in Puyallup this is the ninth year of the “Fill the Canoe School Supply Drive.” Last year more than 3,100 pounds of school supplies were donated throughout the community.

School Supply needsThe supplies will be gathered and distributed to the district’s 32 schools to help students who need them the most.
