The Puyallup School District is exploring the option to purchase Spot Vision Screeners to screen for distance and near vision acuity to comply with the new mandate, outlined in WAC 246-760-071 and effective July 1, 2017. Currently Health Services uses the Snellen test chart as mandated by WAC 246-760-070 and is not stocked with the appropriate equipment to meet the new mandate.

In less than 5 seconds, the Spot screens the whole lens at once to provide the school nurse with a pass or refer result to indicate whether a student should be referred for further evaluation by an optometrist. This screener would provide opportunities for early intervention and equal access to students who may not be able to participate in the vision screening process because of disabilities and/or other barriers they present which prohibits them from identifying items and/or letters found on the basic Snellen chart. The Spot’s ability to provide results in an expedient manner would also reduce the future costs associated with the current vision screening process.

We invite our community members to view the vision screening device and provide input at any of our regional forums scheduled in June.
