band testingThe Puyallup School District is pleased to offer instrumental instruction to all interested fifth and sixth-grade students. In band or orchestra, students will learn how to read music, play an instrument, and work together with friends to make beautiful, fun, and exciting music.

The benefits of learning to play an instrument are numerous. Research shows that students who participate in instrumental music perform better in their other academic studies, become collaborative "team-players," and can strengthen parts of the brain which only respond to music.

The Elementary Band and Orchestra Program takes place before the elementary school day begins. Instruction takes place in the junior high school during their first period. Students may ride the district's bus to their local junior high school. After class, the students return to their individual elementary schools by shuttle bus.

Beginning Wednesday, September 7, fifth-grade students across the district will have the opportunity to test out various instruments from a band or orchestra. Music teachers from the local store, Music & Arts will be play testing students. All students will have the chance to try out an instrument. This will help them decide if they would like to join beginning band or orchestra.

Information meetings have also been scheduled. Meetings are scheduled for
Tuesday, September 13 at Rogers High School
Thursday, September 15 at Puyallup High School
Tuesday, September 20 at Emerald Ridge High School

These meetings will take place in the band room from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. Future band and orchestra families are encouraged to stop by and learn more about the district's band and orchestra program. Rental information will be provided at this time.
