08-21-12: Change in Elementary Back to School Nights for 2012-13

Budget reductions of nearly eight million dollars were realized in a number of ways this year. In an effort to save $200,000 typically used to pay staff to attend “Welcome Back Nights” at the elementary schools, the district has agreed to host all back-to-school activities on the first day of school for students, Wednesday, September 5.

Across the district, each of our 21 elementary schools will welcome students and their families on the morning of September 5. Each principal will work with his or her own staff to create a welcoming environment for everyone returning from summer break.

After families have been greeted and welcomed, students will be ushered to their classrooms so that formal instruction can begin. Parents may have time for continued conversation as scheduled at each building, but by mid-morning the “Welcome Back” festivities will end.

Elementary schools will still schedule their annual curriculum nights in mid-September or early October where families will be invited to learn more about their child’s classroom. Curriculum nights are designed to inform families about the adopted curriculum and expectations for the upcoming year.

During times of economic challenge, we have learned to become quite creative with our financial resources. This simple change in practice has allowed the district to retain a few additional classroom teachers, thus lowering class sizes. We trust that taxpayers in our community appreciate good stewardship.
