04-10-12: School board to honor Teachers of the Year April 23

The Puyallup School Board will honor this year's Teachers of the Year at its next meeting on Monday, April 23.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Ballou Junior High, 9916 136th St. E., Puyallup.

Buddy Keller, who teaches second grade at Edgerton Elementary, and Kris Diamond, who teaches special education at Kalles Junior High, are this year’s Puyallup School District Teachers of the Year.

The teachers learned of their awards last month with surprise visits during all-school staff meetings attended by Superintendent Tony Apostle and Board President Greg Heath.

Both teacher honorees received flowers or a plant and a box of candy from the district, as well as standing ovations, hugs, and handshakes from their colleagues.

The teachers were selected following a nomination process in which district staff and community members were invited to submit names for consideration.

Each year, the district selects one elementary and one junior high or high school teacher for the honor.

Their names will be submitted to the Puget Sound Educational Service District to be considered for the regional Teacher of the Year program. Regional winners are expected to be announced in August, and those selected will be considered for the 2013 Washington State Teacher of the Year to be announced in fall.

Keller was hired in 2006, worked on year at Zeiger Elementary, and then moved to Edgerton Elementary when it opened in 2007.

Diamond has taught special education at Kalles Junior High since she was hired by the district in 2001.

Keller and Diamond also will be featured in the June issue of the school district's Connections newsletter.
