Visual Arts
The Puyallup School District is committed to influencing the development of responsible contributing citizens forkid a diverse and changing world. We believe each student has a unique voice and should have the opportunity to express their perspective and point of view through the arts.

The state has adopted the National Core Arts Standards as the Washington State K-12 Arts Learning Standards which includes eleven anchor standards defining the general knowledge and skills that Washington's students should demonstrate in the arts. The eleven anchor standards are arranged under four artistic processes (creating, performing/presenting/producing, responding, and connecting.)


The arts should be an integral part of every student's educational experience. We believe all students are artists, with the power to make meaning by viewing and creating works of art. Each week, elementary students should have the chance to study art, learn art elements and skills, and make art.

In January 2019 an Arts Cadre began working on the development of instructional materials to support elementary teachers in the delivery of visual arts instruction. Broadly speaking, the following goals continue to drive the work:
  1. To provide opportunity for learners to find meaning in visual art
  2. To ensure learners use the elements of art to create meaning. To follow the Washington State Visual Arts Standards Appendix 3: Recommended Foundational Skills as a guideline for curriculum development.
  3. To learn and apply visual thinking strategies to read art as text. To apply literacy skills such as citing evidence, making inferences, and identifying points of view to examine works of art as non-print text.
  4. To promote student agency through the arts (Agency - the satisfying power to make our own decisions and choices, take meaningful action, and see the results in our own development and learning.)
  5. To provide all PSD teachers with the knowledge and strategies necessary to lead conversations in the study of works of art (i.e. paraphrasing, higher level questioning, making connections, allowing perspective and voice.)
  6. To produce a PSD Arts Foundation Curriculum of 20 lessons and three assessments for each elementary teacher and student in Kindergarten through grade 12.


At the junior high level, students may take courses which teach students to understand and apply art knowledge and skill. The principles of design and organization are studied. Students create art projects based on the elementary of design: line, value, color, texture, shape, and form. They also use various techniques and media, such as drawing, painting, design, and printmaking. Students explore the use of different art media, styles, traditions, and audience skills.

Successful completion in grades 9-12 of any full-year visual art course or any two 0.5 credit courses satisfies the 1.0 arts requirement for graduation. For the Class of 2019 and beyond, the arts requirement will increase to 2.0 credits and one credit may be PPR.
