Intra-District Transfer

Due to overcrowding and high enrollment, not every school in the Puyallup School District is open for in-district and non-resident transfers.  Please see the following list of closed schools for the 2018-2019 school year (this list is subject to change).

If you submit a transfer request for a school that is closed, it will be denied, unless your student meets one of the criteria for an exception, as described below.

The following exceptions apply:

- ​Siblings of a student currently attending and returning to the same school for the 2018/19 school year

Children of district employee
-
Non-resident transfer renewals (students continuing at their current school)

If the school that you want is listed above, please provide a 1st and 2nd choice from the schools that are open.

Resident students who wish to attend a school other than their resident school in the next school year must complete the appropriate Intra-District Transfer Application and submit it by the deadlines indicated below. Applications can be downloaded from the Transfer Request Forms section below on this page. Applications are also available at school offices and the Puyallup School District Education Service Center.

In-district Transfer Approval Criteria

Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis and are contingent on the following criteria:

-There is adequate capacity in the school; acceptance of the transfer should not cause a hardship on resident students.
-
The student demonstrates regular attendance, academic effort, and conformance with school disciplinary standards.
-
The parent is willing and able to provide timely transportation.
-
The school offers a program suitable to meet the educational and other needs of the student.

If the student does not meet these four criteria, the principal will communicate expectations to the parent and student, and the transfer may be revoked.

Transportation: The Puyallup School District does not provide transportation for students who are approved to transfer to a school outside of their attendance area, so parents are required to provide transportation.

Students Currently Attending School on a Transfer: Due to boundary revisions which will go into effect for the 2019-20 school year, current approved in-district transfer students are required to reapply for the 2019-20 school year. If your student is currently attending a school on an approved intra-district transfer and a new transfer request has not been approved for the 2019-20 school year, their enrollment will be moved to their home attendance area school for the 2019-20 school year. Additionally, current 6th graders or 9th graders wanting to select a different junior high or high school rather than their home attendance area school must submit a transfer application.

Feeder Schools: Please keep in mind that if you request to transfer to an elementary school or junior high school outside of your home attendance area, you may either have to continue to request transfers and transport your student, or your student will have to separate from their peer group when moving up to junior high or high school.

Application Due Dates

Secondary: Junior high or high school transfer requests for the next school year will not be accepted before December 10 (applications submitted before this time will be automatically denied or returned). For optimal consideration, submit the Junior High or High School Intra-District Transfer Request by January 10. Parents will be notified of acceptance or denial of the request by February 28. Additional due dates for review are April 10 and June 1. Transfer requests submitted after the third due date in June may not be considered until after the fourth day of school in September.

Elementary: Elementary school transfer requests for the next school year will not be accepted before February 14 (applications submitted before this time will be automatically denied or returned). For optimal consideration, submit the Elementary Intra-District Transfer Request by March 1. Parents will be notified of acceptance or denial of the application by April 15. Additional due dates are May 1 and June 15. Transfer requests submitted after the third due date in June may not be considered until after the fourth day of school in September.

Submitting an Appeal

Parents have the right to appeal a transfer application that is denied or revoked. A letter mailed to the address below or e-mail should be submitted to Stacie Estrada at estrasl@puyallup.k12.wa.us within five business days of receipt of the notification. A meeting or phone conference will be scheduled within 15 business days to address the appeal.

Rescinding a Transfer

Parents who wish to rescind a transfer and enroll their child in their resident school should fill out a Request to Rescind form or submit a rescind letter as soon as possible.
