When kids need help, the community responds

Every child deserves to have the school supplies they need and a backpack to carry them in. More than 20 Puyallup businesses and organizations are working together to make that a reality for students and families in need.

The annual “Fill the Canoe School Supply Drive” is in full swing and donations will be accepted at local businesses through August 23. A list of donation drop-off locations is listed on the website. Businesses can also register to accept donations through the site.

Sponsored by Communities In Schools of Puyallup, in partnership with Red Canoe Credit Union located on 39th and Meridian, and 16510 Meridian St E, in Puyallup this is the tenth year of the “Fill the Canoe School Supply Drive.” Last year more than 4,000 pounds of school supplies were donated throughout the community.

Jacquie Rutherford (left) and Brenda Snowden  (right) from Mt. Rainier Federal Credit Union arrived at the Puyallup School District with an SUV full of school supply donations on August 7.  The donations they collect are matched by the City of Puyallup. This is the seventh year they have partnered to collect school supplies for Puyallup students.

Rutherford said the supply drive was a success this year, and when others match the donations it leverages the amount that is collected.

Next, the Red Canoe Credit Union will match a dollar for each pound of supplies donated.

The annual school supply drive provides essential basic supplies and backpacks. Items needed the most this year are:

   • large backpacks;
   • 2-3 inch binders;
   • dividers;
   • highlighters;
   • sharpies;
   •3-ring pencil pouches; and
   • colored pencils.

The supplies will be gathered and distributed to the district’s 32 schools to help students who need them the most.
