High
school students in grades 10 through 12 are invited to a free workshop
on February 11, 12 or 13 to prepare for the SAT exam.
The
workshops will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on February 11 at Emerald
Ridge High, February 12 at Puyallup High, and February 13 at Rogers
High.
The sessions on February 11 and 13 will present information on math,
while the February 12 workshop will focus on reading and writing.
Students
from those three comprehensive high schools, as well as those attending
Walker High, may sign up for the math workshop, the reading and writing
workshop, or both sections.
Students interested in attending may register online or sign
up at the high school counseling office where they plan to take the
workshop, said Walker High School counselor David Rosdahl.
The workshops are sponsored by the school district in partnership with DeVry University’s Federal Way campus.
This
is the first time the district and DeVry University have partnered to
provide the workshops at no cost to students. Last year, an outside
company administered the workshop and charged $89 per student, Rosdahl
said.
The
SAT is a standardized test for most college admissions in the United
States and is intended to assess a student’s readiness for college.
“High SAT scores can also open the door for scholarships, awards, and
recognition,” Rosdahl said.
Students
generally take the exam in grades 10-12 and can take the exam more than
once. Preparation is key for taking the exam, which costs $51 each time
it is taken, Rosdahl said.
